Best WiFi Router for a 5-10 Person Small Office: An Honest Buying Guide
The right router makes a significant difference in a small office. Here's how to choose one that won't let you down.
The ISP technician set up your office internet by plugging in a white plastic modem-router combo, typing in a password, and leaving. For a 2-person operation, that's fine. For a 10-person office with video calls, cloud sync, and visitors needing WiFi, it's a recipe for daily frustration.
Here's what to look for in a business router — and which options are practical for small offices in Vietnam.
Why Consumer Routers Fail in Offices
Consumer routers (including most ISP-provided equipment) are designed for homes with 3-5 users and typical home usage. They lack:
Adequate connection handling: Most consumer routers handle 10-20 simultaneous connections comfortably. Offices with 10 staff plus phones, laptops, and IoT devices easily exceed 30+ connections.
QoS (Quality of Service): Without QoS, a single person downloading a Windows update can make everyone else's video call unusable.
VLAN support: You need to separate staff network from guest WiFi. Most consumer routers can't do this properly.
Management visibility: No logs, no traffic monitoring, no way to see what's happening on the network.
Reliability under load: Consumer routers are not designed for 8-10 hours of heavy daily use by 10+ users.
Key Specs to Understand
WiFi standard:
- WiFi 5 (802.11ac) — adequate for most small offices
- WiFi 6 (802.11ax) — better for high-density environments with many devices; worth the premium if buying new hardware
Dual-band vs. tri-band:
- Dual-band (2.4 GHz + 5 GHz) — sufficient for most offices up to 15 people
- Tri-band — benefits larger offices or when separating IoT devices
MU-MIMO (Multi-User, Multiple Input, Multiple Output): Allows the router to communicate with multiple devices simultaneously rather than sequentially. Important for offices — look for 2x2 MU-MIMO minimum, 4x4 for busier environments.
Maximum device connections: Look for routers rated for 30+ simultaneous devices. Consumer routers often claim higher numbers than they can reliably handle.
VPN server support: If any staff work remotely, a router with built-in VPN server capability saves you from needing additional hardware. OpenVPN or WireGuard support is preferable.
VLAN/guest network isolation: Mandatory for security. Must support proper VLAN-based isolation, not just a basic guest password.
Recommended Models for Small Offices
Budget Option: TP-Link EAP Series (Omada Ecosystem)
Best for: Offices wanting a managed WiFi solution at a reasonable price.
TP-Link's EAP (Easy Access Point) series is the most practical choice for Vietnamese small businesses. Key advantages:
- Central management via Omada Controller (free software or cloud)
- Can manage multiple access points from one interface
- VLAN and guest network support
- Reliable in humid tropical climates
- Available from local distributors in Da Nang and major Vietnamese cities
Recommended models:
- EAP225 — WiFi 5, budget-friendly, good for offices up to 50 users
- EAP670 — WiFi 6, better performance, worth the premium for newer office setups
- EAP670(OD) — outdoor version if you need coverage outside
Price range: 1.5-3.5 million VND per access point
Note: TP-Link Omada access points work best paired with an Omada-compatible router (like the ER7206) for full management features. The access points alone can work with any router, but the Omada Controller adds significant value.
Mid-Range Option: ASUS ExpertWiFi
Best for: Small offices that want good performance without complex configuration.
ASUS ExpertWiFi (formerly ASUS Business) series provides:
- Intuitive management interface
- Guest network with proper isolation
- Parental controls (useful for blocking non-work sites)
- Better build quality than typical consumer models
Recommended models:
- EBR63 — WiFi 6, mesh-capable, good for offices up to 30 users
- EBM68 — higher performance, better for dense environments
Price range: 2.5-5 million VND
Premium Option: Ubiquiti UniFi
Best for: Offices that want enterprise-grade features and visibility without enterprise prices.
Ubiquiti UniFi is the professional choice — used by IT teams worldwide:
- Comprehensive traffic visibility and logging
- Excellent VLAN and multi-SSID support
- Scales from a single access point to hundreds
- Cloud or local management via UniFi Controller
- Very reliable hardware
Drawback: Requires more technical knowledge to configure properly. Not a plug-and-play solution.
Recommended for a 10-person office:
- UniFi U6 Lite — WiFi 6, cost-effective
- UniFi U6 Pro — higher density environments
Price range: 2.5-6 million VND per access point
You'll also need a UniFi gateway (router) and switch for a full UniFi setup. This makes UniFi more expensive as a complete solution, but the visibility and control are excellent.
Single Router vs. Router + Access Points
For a small, single-room office, a single business router may be sufficient.
For any office with:
- Multiple rooms
- More than one floor
- Areas farther than 15 meters from a central router
- 15+ users
...a dedicated router + ceiling-mounted access points is better than a single router in the corner.
Typical setup for a 10-person office:
- 1 business router (TP-Link ER series, Asus Pro, or similar) — 3-5 million VND
- 2 WiFi access points (ceiling-mounted, TP-Link EAP or ASUS) — 1.5-3 million VND each
- 1 managed network switch (TP-Link TL-SG series) — 1-3 million VND
Total investment: 7-14 million VND for a complete, properly configured small office network.
What the Setup Process Looks Like
Installing a business network properly involves:
- Planning cable runs (ethernet cables from router/switch to access point locations)
- Configuring VLANs for staff and guest networks
- Setting up QoS rules for video call priority
- Enabling management features (logging, device inventory)
- Setting strong admin passwords and disabling unnecessary features
This is a 1-2 day project for an experienced IT technician. Improper configuration is common with DIY setups and leads to security gaps and performance issues.
Is It Time to Upgrade?
Consider upgrading your network when:
- Video calls drop regularly or freeze
- Internet speeds vary significantly by location in the office
- You can't give visitors WiFi without sharing your business network password
- You have no visibility into what's on your network
