Where to Buy a Genuine Windows License (and Why to Avoid Cheap Keys)
A $5 Windows key from an online marketplace looks tempting — but it comes with serious risks. Here's what genuine licensing looks like.
You search online for a Windows 11 Pro license and find keys selling for 50,000-200,000 VND on Facebook, Shopee, Tiki, or international sites like G2A. Meanwhile, Microsoft's official price is several million VND. Why is there such a price difference? And does it matter?
Yes. It matters a lot — especially for a business.
What Types of Windows Licenses Exist
To understand pricing, understand the license types:
OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer): Comes pre-installed on new computers. Tied permanently to that specific computer's hardware (specifically the motherboard). If you buy a new Dell or HP and it comes with Windows 11 Home, that's an OEM license. Non-transferable — can't be moved to another computer.
Retail: Purchased from Microsoft or authorized retailers. Transferable — can be moved from one computer to another (deactivated on the old one). Can be used on any compatible hardware.
Volume Licensing (MOLP/EA): For businesses with multiple computers. Requires a volume licensing agreement with Microsoft. Cannot be purchased retail.
Microsoft 365 Subscription: Some Microsoft 365 plans include Windows 11 rights through a subscription model.
What Are the Cheap Online Keys Actually Selling?
When you buy a Windows key for 50,000-200,000 VND from an online marketplace, you're typically getting one of these:
Stolen OEM keys: Extracted from hardware that was never shipped, gray-market sourced from certain regions, or harvested from recycled computers. These keys initially activate Windows — but Microsoft detects them and may invalidate them in future Windows updates.
Volume licensing keys leaked or resold: Volume licenses are meant for specific organisations and their users. Keys being sold individually on the open market are almost certainly unauthorized resales. Microsoft blacklists these regularly.
KMS-based fake activation: The "license" is actually a script that mimics Microsoft's licensing server. This is essentially cracked Windows — not a real license at all.
Regional pricing arbitrage (rare): Occasionally legitimate keys purchased from markets where Microsoft sells at lower prices are resold in Vietnam. This is a gray area — technically the license may be valid but may violate the purchasing terms.
The risk: Microsoft can invalidate these keys remotely. When this happens, you receive a "Windows isn't activated" notice, lose access to personalization features, and see a persistent watermark on your desktop. More importantly for a business — you're now operating on unactivated Windows, which means no further security updates until resolved.
Where to Buy Genuine Windows Licenses
Microsoft Store (microsoft.com/en-vn): Purchase directly from Microsoft. Retail license, transferable, fully supported. This is the most straightforward and reliable option.
Authorized Microsoft Resellers in Vietnam: Microsoft partners who are authorized to sell Microsoft products. They provide genuine licenses with proper documentation — important for business compliance.
New PC purchase: When buying a new computer, ensure it comes with genuine Windows OEM. Dell, HP, Lenovo, and Asus computers sold through official channels in Vietnam include genuine Windows OEM.
Microsoft 365 Business: Some Microsoft 365 plans include Windows 11 licensing rights. If you're subscribing to Microsoft 365 Business Premium, for example, your subscription includes Windows rights as part of the package.
Business vs. Personal Licensing
For a business, there's an additional consideration: Windows 11 Pro vs. Home.
Windows 11 Home lacks several features important for business use:
- No domain join (can't connect to Active Directory)
- No BitLocker encryption
- No Remote Desktop (incoming connections)
- No Group Policy management
- Limited Hyper-V support
Most businesses should be using Windows 11 Pro or Windows 11 Pro for Workstations. If your computers are running Windows 11 Home, this may be inadequate for a proper business setup.
Volume licensing also gives businesses additional management capabilities (Windows Autopilot, Microsoft Intune management) that aren't available with retail or OEM licenses.
What to Do If You Have Unactivated Windows
If your computers are running with activation issues:
- Check the activation status: Settings → System → Activation
- If showing "Not activated" or "Product key not working," you need a genuine license
- Purchase from an authorized source (see above)
- If you have a product key that's been invalidated, you may need to purchase a new license
For businesses with multiple computers in this situation, a volume licensing agreement is the most cost-effective solution.
